Low-cost apartments now are available for LDS Hospital cancer patients and their loved ones.

Known as "Healing Homes," three remodeled houses comprise five apartments near 8th Avenue and B Street. The apartments "will provide safe, convenient and affordable housing" surrounding a garden for up to 150 patients and their families annually, according to a news release from the hospital.

The medical center showed off the housing units, which hospital spokesman Jess Gomez says will cost $30 to $45 per night.

LDS Hospital's blood-and-marrow transplant program is one of two in the Intermountain West that provide specialized care for people who have lymphoma, leukemia and/or forms of blood cancer, the release states.

Many patients from all over the West live hours away, the hospital says, yet they have to live within 60 miles of the medical center during their months-long treatment in case an emergency occurs. The hospital estimates that at least 30 percent of these patients have to relocate to Salt Lake City, causing emotional and financial tolls for them and their families, which the medical center hopes to alleviate with the housing program.
